When considering senior living for yourself or a loved one, you’ll likely include community tours on your to-do list. Knowing what questions to ask during your visit is important for making an informed choice.

That’s why our team at Emory Mills created a list of essential questions to ask and things to look for in your search for senior living. Take a look at our list below to help you prepare for your visit.

Important questions to ask during your senior living community tour

As you consider senior living for yourself or a loved one, don’t be surprised if you sometimes feel overwhelmed. Moving to a senior living community is a significant life decision you shouldn’t take lightly.

Before you tour a community, make sure you have a list of questions to ask while you’re there. You’ll feel more confident with your decision when you can look back at your notes and compare and assess each community objectively.

Start with the following questions on your community visit:

  • What is the resident-to-staff ratio?
  • What levels of care are offered?
  • What training and qualifications do staff members have?
  • What types of activities are offered and how often?
  • What do the on-site amenities include?
  • Do the bathrooms have safety features like grab bars and walk-in showers?
  • What dining options are available?
  • Is additional storage available for residents?
  • Are housekeeping and laundry services available?
  • What type of outdoor space is offered for activities or exercise?
  • Are outings regularly planned?
  • What spiritual programs are available?
  • Is there an emergency response system?
  • Are staff available 24/7?
  • Is there a fitness center or exercise classes?
  • Is transportation offered?
  • Are pets allowed?
  • What does a typical day look like for residents?
  • How is socialization encouraged?
  • What types of safety and security measures are in place?
  • What apartment floor plans are offered?
  • Is there a waiting list? If so, how long is the expected wait?
  • Can residents personalize their apartments? Bring their own furniture?
  • What is the monthly fee?
  • What is included in the monthly fee?
  • What services cost extra?
  • Are there any current move-in specials?
  • What happens if a resident’s care needs change?
  • How are families involved in community life? A resident’s plan of care?
  • Are there volunteer opportunities for residents?
  • Is there specialized care and programming available for residents living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia?

What to look for during your senior living community tour

While walking around the community, remember to be aware of your surroundings. Sometimes, tuning in to the details with your five senses is helpful. For example, while luxurious lobby furnishings and fancy décor may be impressive, try looking beyond the features to truly get a feel for the community.

Ask yourself the following questions when using your five senses:

  • What is the condition of the building and grounds?
  • How do the staff and residents interact with one another?
  • Does the staff call the residents by name?
  • Are residents out and about within the community?
  • Are residents engaged with one another?
  • What smells do you notice in the hallways, common rooms, and apartments?
  • What sounds do you hear when moving throughout the community?
  • How is the location? Does it feel safe? Is it noisy? Are you close to restaurants, shops, and medical facilities?
  • Does the community feel welcoming?
  • How well has the staff communicated with you so far?
  • Do the residents seem happy?
  • Does the staff seem passionate about their jobs?
  • How are the residents dressed? Formal? Informal?

Take your time to find the right community for your loved one

Finding the right senior living community for you or your loved one may take time. You don’t want to rush into the decision. Remember to do your research by viewing the community’s website, including reading online reviews.

Talk to others who work or live in the community to get an insider’s look and feel for the culture. Some communities offer day programs, respite or trial stays to allow your loved one to experience life on campus. Ask questions and schedule multiple visits until you feel comfortable and confident with your decision.
